Arma 3 – In a Class of its Own
Acknowledged as the King of military simulation games, Arma 3 is in a class of its own as far as the sheer size of the map is concerned – giving the user an unlimited opportunity for realistic military tactics and advanced weaponry. It all started in May 2011 when Bohemia Interactive officially announced that Arma 3 was on its way. The alpha version of the game was demonstrated in mid-2012 and released on March 5, 2013, giving players the chance to participate in game development by reporting bugs and voicing opinions on the game experience. The alpha version automatically upgraded to beta in mid-2013 followed by the official release of the final version in September 2013.
Plot
Arma 3 plays on the real-world political scenario in its storyline that's based on NATO forces defending Europe against CSAT (Canton-Protocol Strategic Alliance Treaty) led by the rather amusingly named resurgent 'Iran'. As all such attacking forces in the world's history, CSAT is the puppet(s) in the hands of a brilliantly destructive coalition of Middle Eastern and Asian nations.
Episode 3 is 25 years following the scenario depicted in Episode 2 (Arma 2). The futuristic saga unfolds as the brave soldiers of NATO try to hold firm against a CSAT assault on the Grecian islands of Altis and Stratis. Massively outnumbered, the NATO troops (game players) must be singularly ingenious and have an active strategic knowledge of military tactics.
Graphics
Arma 3 Graphics, though awe-inspiring, are inconsistent over the tenure of the game. Frame rate dips are reported even on high-end PCs. The still bottleneck caused by graphics might be the only proverbial chink in the game's impenetrable armor. The game does allow a configurable graphics setting that allows players to tune down the settings to standard and low. Even then some performance lagging does occur which slightly mars the overall experience.
Episodes
The story revolves around the dynamic Corporal Ben Kerry (the character assumed by single-player mode). The first episode, called Survive, is more like an introduction to Arma and depicts Kerry hooking up with NATO survivors on the smaller of two islands. Kerry and the team participate in short missions against CSAT, which focus on getting the players to learn the basics of the game.
Survive leads to Adapt where you enter the world of Altis, which is in itself a remarkable feat of online combat zone portrayal. Adapt is where you familiarize yourself with the terrain and learn how you can take cover under a small rise in the ground or benefit from a nearby vantage point to gain intel on the enemy lines. Adapt's difficulty level is significantly higher than Survive and command over the games control features becomes a necessity. In this episode where you become a leader rather than a follower and test your ability to command a squad! The level of interaction required here to deal with the team (A.I. units) will determine whether you're going to be hooked onto Arma 3 forever or join the once-in-a-while gang.
Episode 3 brings you to 'Win' where you can experience spectacular battles that span large areas of Altis. The strategic operations come into play, and you may feel dominated by the sheer enormity of scale that is Arma 3.
Single-Player Mode
Arma 3 was received quite well in the simulated military games genre although critics and fans have both pointed out the lack of attention given to loners (single mode players) when the game first released. Traditionally, Arma's popularity arose from the variety of single-player campaigns available along with the extensive multiplayer options. The current game has added to the map via the islands of Altis and Stratis, and the new settings have received much praise from the media. They are rated right along with China's (Arma 2) in the Guardian's ten most beautiful video game environments which also include Skyrim, Los Santos, and Empire Bay.
Multiplayer Mode
Player engagement in this game is extremely high! Fans claim the game requires a high level of expertise. Players cannot be useful in a multiplayer mode without expert knowledge of all the Rapid 'Key' Movement (short for keyboard combinations) that is used to access the vast array of movements and features. It is this level of engagement and interactivity that has been the hallmark of the Arma episodes, and Arma 3 leaves nothing to desired regarding immersive engagement. Arma 3 controls encompass the whole keyboard for all possible actions that range from switching between ammunition to interacting with fellow squad members and released hostages (A.I. units). In between tapping the keys, you also need to do some extensive work with the mouse wheel – used to scroll through the list of possible actions open to you at any point in the game.
How to Play
Arma 3 doesn't make it easy for a soldier to survive out there – there are no tutorials available for you to get a handle on the complicated maneuvers. Players with an extraordinary amount of patience may sit through Arma's Showcases that are one-off missions depicting various scenarios in the game. As they are not interactive, the learning opportunity is limited. Nevertheless, the on-screen tips on key-combinations are helpful out there on the island of Altis. While it may not be an effective or efficient method to teach recruits how to handle themselves on the field, it is nonetheless the only mode of instruction available to new players who are likely to go through a period of frustration before hitting on a group of veterans to show them the ropes. A firing range provides a welcome distraction and a chance to test out the weaponry and get comfortable with basic commands.
Seriously, though, the only way to survive in this game is to hook on to a community of veterans who are generous with the inside secrets. There's no limit on the number of players that can hook onto a server, but this doesn't make it any easier to survive. New players will end up with a group of random strangers who do not know each other and cannot cooperate effectively on the battlefield. The ensuing chaos can be fun or wearisome – based on your attachment to the game and the amount of time you invest.
Coop Missions
Co-op missions present the best chance for new players to figure out how life is in Altis and Stratis. The smaller tasks with a little group of players is a great way to experience Arma 3s emergent gameplay. Consider a scenario where you and your fellow recruits get stuck on Stratis and have to make it through to an extraction point several kilometers away.
Halfway there you can come across a village with a few enemy hangers-on just holding the fort till their buddies pick them up on the way to a mission of mayhem on the other side of the island. You overcome them and success bear fruit in the way of a truck that takes you a bit further on your journey. On route to the extraction point, you can encounter any number of surprise scenarios to test out your abilities making it a bit easier to survive in a more extensive multiplayer game.
One of the signs of establishing yourself in command is when your squad starts following your orders. Unlike the real world, this is not a given at all, and one can go through several amusing actions before the team comprehends what they are supposed to do. Even then they are not very likely to follow suit and do as you command! This lack of player cooperation and communication is a handicap for new players but for veterans who form larger more experienced online communities the level of interaction possible between the team and the response from the AI component of the game is another bonus point.
Some players have reported hilarious scenarios of rescue operations where hostages 'refused' rescue or would not get on board the rescue vehicle! Such antics can reflect your sense of humor or test your dedication to winning. All in all, what the game lacks in a coordinated effort (always an issue in multiplayer games) it makes up for in overall gaming experience.
Interactivity
From distance or vantage point, the important dimensions of the island of Altis (270 square kilometers) and its smaller counterpart Stratis (20 square kilometers) make it easy to ignore the lack of scenic assets and seen empty buildings used to fill up the vast space. The scenery is just sufficient enough to make the surroundings bearable but up close and personal Arma 3 can seem a bit lacking when it comes to enjoying beautiful graphics. The accompanying music and sound effects are also a bit lacking in reality and detract from the otherwise realistic impression formed when encountering difficulties at every turn. Nevertheless, the built-in mission editor and Steam Workshop integration provide an opportunity for players' imagination, creativity, and dedication.
Add-ons
To the delight of fans, Bohemia released the first downloadable content (DLC) for Arma 3 on April 10, 2014. Titled ‘Zeus', the new mode allowed players to become God-like creatures in full control of real-time scenarios. The next DLC was a bit of an accident – emerging from an April Fool video released by Bohemia announcing that the game would now feature Go-kart racing! The video went viral, and the idea seemed to appeal to fans resulting in the addition of 20 types of Karts to the games. Unlike the Zeus mode, Karts is not for free. In Nov 2014, two new transport helicopters were released. Players who purchased the DLC got a CH-67 Huron heavy-lift helicopter, an MI-290 Taru massive utility helicopter, a Showcase for sling loading, and four helicopter trial courses. The Bootcamp Update released on July 14, 2014, and is a big hit with new players with its short campaign that serves as a training ground for recruits. The plot placed as a prequel to the main game.
Verdict
It wouldn't be farfetched to say that Arma 3 is a benchmark for military simulation games to come. The sheer strategic depth and the diversity of content at player's disposal are remarkable, to say the least. The graphics issue does leave a sour taste in the mouth but doesn't exert that much of an impact. It won't be surprising if the actual military of a country picks up the game as a virtual training tool for its forces. A must-have for all military simulation game lovers.

The following steps explain how to install the Exile modification on a normal ArmA 3 Gameserver:
Required software:
- FTP program (e.g. FileZilla)
- Text editor (e.g. Notepad++)

- Possibility 1: Nitrado.net > Order Service > Publicserver Basic > Game 'ArmA 3' > Order now
- Possibility 2: Open the server's Webinterface > Game Management > Install ArmA 3
- Stop the Gameserver
Download Exile Mod
- The mod's client and server files can be downloaded from the official website. In order to join the server, the Exile mod files need to be installed on the PC too.
- Client files: http://acp-cdn.vilayer.com/exile/@Exile-0.9.19.zip
- Server files: http://acp-cdn.vilayer.com/exile/@ExileServer-0.9.19.zip
Install / upload the client files
- Unzip the downloaded 'Exile-0.9.19.zip' archive.
- Upload the '@Exile' to the resource directory of your Gameserver (folder: arma3).
- The path should look like this: /arma3/@Exile/
Install / upload the server files
- Unzip the downloaded 'ExileServer-0.9.19.zip' archive.
- Migrate the folders 'keys' and 'mpmissions' with those already on the server.
- The respective paths are: /arma3/keys/ and /arma3/mpmissions/
- Upload every file from the 'BattlEye' folder to the /arma3/config/battleye/ directory on the server.
- Upload the files listed below from the '@ExileServer' folder to the server's 'arma3' directory:
- Folder: extDB
- File: extDB2.dll
- File: extdb-conf.ini
- File: tbb.dll
- File: tbbmalloc.dll
- Upload the folder '@ExileServer' the the server's ressource directory (folder: arma3)
- The path should be: /arma3/@ExileServer/
configure config.bin (@ExileServer/addons)
- Open the 'exile_server_config.pbo' file (directory: /@ExileServer/addons/) with the PBOManager programm.
- Extract and copy the 'config.bin' file to your PC's desktop.
- Use the cfgConvert programm to convert the 'config.bin' file to 'config.cpp'.
- There is a detailed explanation about the usage on the download page. The programm also ships with a GUI if you so desire.
- Open the created 'config.cpp' file with an text editor and edit the following lines:
serverPassword='KAPPAchangeMeKAPPA';
Replace KAPPAchangeMeKAPPA with another password of your choosing.
Also edit the lineIReadAndModifiedThisByMyWishes = 0;and change the value to 1:IReadAndModifiedThisByMyWishes = 1;. - Use the cfgConvert programm to convert the 'config.cpp' file back to 'config.bin'.
- Use the PBOManager to import the 'config.bin' file back into the server's PBO file (exile_server_config.pbo).
- Upload the 'exile_server_config.pbo' file back to your server's /arma3/@ExileServer/addons/ directory.
configure config.cfg (@ExileServer)
- Open the server's Webinterface > Server > File Browser
- Edit the 'config.cfg' file located in the /arma3/@ExileServer/ direcotry.
- Change the following line:
serverCommandPassword = 'KAPPAchangeMeKAPPA';
Replace the 'KAPPAchangeMeKAPPA' value with the password you previously entered in the config.cpp / config.bin file and click on save.
configure server.cfg (arma3)
- Open the server's Webinterface > Server > File Browser
- Edit the 'server.cfg' file located in the /arma3/config/ direcotry.
- Change the following line:
template = Stratis;
Change 'Starts' to 'Exile.Altis;' and save the file.
It should look like this:template = Exile.Altis;
Import the MySQL database
- Download the database dump file: [database]
- Open the server's Webinterface > Dashboard > phpMyAdmin
- Click on the database 'niXXX_X_DB' in the left collumn to select it.
- Select the 'SQL' tab from the top menu bar.
- Open the file 'ExileAltis-0.9.19.txt' using a text editor.
- Copy the file's contents (STRG + A, STRG + C)
- Paste the content's into the 'SQL' (STRG + V) and press 'OK'.
configure extdb-conf.ini (arma3)
- Open the server's Webinterface > Server > File Browser
- Edit the 'extdb-conf.ini' file located in the /arma3/ directory.
- Enter the server's RCON password in the 'RemoteAccess' > 'Password' section of the file. The server's Rcon password is located in the 'beserver.cfg' file (folder: /arma3/config/battleye)
- Adjust the MySQL credentials in the file's '[exile]' section like this:
- Name = database name (niXXXXXX_X_DB)
- Username = database username (niXXXXXX_X_DB)
- Password = database password
- IP = server address (msXXX.nitrado.net)
- Save the file
Adjust the server's start parameter
Install Exile Mod Arma 3
- Open the server's Webinterface > Server > Settings
- Add the mods in the 'Additional Mods' field like this:
@Exile;@ExileServer; - Enable the AutoInit function
- Save the settings
ArmA 3 Exile is now installed on the server.
